I'm Thinking About Harvey this Morning

There are a few people in this world who have so informed my character by their example and taught me such valuable and life-changing lessons, that I think of them quite often and feel their loss keenly, despite the fact that I did not know them in a physical sense. Kurt Vonnegut would be one of these people, and Harvey Milk is another. I admire Harvey tremendously for his honesty and his courage and his determination and I miss him.

"It's not my victory, it's yours and yours and yours. If a gay can win, it means there is hope that the system can work for all minorities if we fight. We've given them hope."

- Harvey Milk, after winning a seat on the Board of Supervisors in 1977

I always think of the men like Harvey who showed more balls than John Wayne and it makes me cry.
Love you, Ms. Bastard-Beloved. I do.

And Amen.

Vonnegut is one of my husband's favorite authors, of which there are few, maybe owing to the PhD in English which seemed to burn him out of the joy of reading. And we got to attend a (rare) Vonnegut reading. It was his last novel. We drove 3 hours both ways, worth it to see and hear a man whose surreal perspective and bitter honesty lit dark corners of American thought.

Kathleen,
If I didn't love you so much, I would be envious.

I was an English major, too!
