No, it's not a new song by Morrissey. My countrymen are idiots.
The Moms told me about this friend of theirs in their retirement park out in Yuma. [He used to be a cop. Go figure.] Anyhoo, the guy went to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie, and the Moms asked how he liked it.
The guy said he didn't like it for three reasons: 1) It is set in the 1800s. 2) It is set in England. 3) It was dark and gloomy.
Uhmmmmm, okay.

Oh my. Sorry he wasted all that money. Someone should have warned him, the poor guy!
WTF!
Well I just love all your posts, I really do. I wish I had your gift for brevity, so sorry....
I just finished John Irvings latest monster, Last Night in Twisted River. He very skillfully wove modern America in all her ignorant glory, Kurt Vonnegut style, into the chapters, and he gave great voice to the outrage and disgust I have for current levels of ignorance and stupidity, and he used the voices of his typically outrageous insane yet sane characters to spit and sputter at Vietnam, Iraq, the dangling chads, the dumb-shit patriotism that's ruining America. It struck a chord.
Hm, I guess I should have said that in my book review. Anyway, I finished the book last night and I was feeling kindof sad and bitter, which means I loved it, and your post made it all rush right back this morning. I wish everyone was smart, I really do. Seriously, Sherlock Holmes? I thought he was a cultural icon. Of course, I forget how many cizitens don't know the 50 states, or how our government works....
Of course what the heck do I know, I'm just the liberal elite bleeding heart tree hugging book reading blog hopping bitter baby boomer sandwich generation demographic. Well I may be crazy but at least I'm not stupid.
Did he think he was going to see a John Holmes film? jeez...
Mel,
I love Irving! I didn't even know that he had a new book out. On your recommendation, I just bought it off Amazon. He and I have very similar viewpoints and politics. My favorite character of fiction may well be the Grandmother in Owen Meany. I adore her!
I grew up reading Mr. Irving's stuff. I also think he's smart to live in Canada.
Sending love and thanks for the tip.

Education is not our forte as a country anymore. I'm sure that he never read the books either.
I'm betting money on that, Syd.
Like it. especially the first sentence.
Thanks, Blackwatertown. Welcome to our warped, but damn fun, world here at Sarcastic Bastard. Join us often.
Best, SB.
Full disclosure, I adore Irving too, Owen Meany most of all. Last Night in Twisted River took me forever - 2 months and 3 or 4 whiny blogposts, plus lots of encouragement to finish, but it was worth it. Just be warned, patience is required in the beginning!
Which is why he retired to Yuma...
We went to see it last week. I'm not big on violence but the movie was fun. Brilliant portrayals. The only person I can think of who could have done as well with the Sherlock character is Johnny Depp, who can do anything in the universe.
As my Italian momma would say, "What er ya gonna do, huh"?
I'm set in England myself...
Cheeky Bugger!
(him I mean not you)
